Introduction: 90 Day Thyroid Rehab

I’m writing today to let you know that Dr. Vy Simeles and myself (Dr. Danielle Lockwood) are participating in a plant-based dietary cleanse for improving thyroid health and overall wellness. We will be sharing our progress and pitfalls as we take this journey together and welcome our patients, friends and everyone else to follow along and participate if they so choose. Just to be clear: No, you don’t have to buy anything except for vegetables from your grocer to follow along and participate Just Subscribe to the newsletter if you haven’t already. Certain parts of this cleanse might not be advisable to certain people, so if you are not one of our patients, please consult your healthcare provider first. If you are a patient, of course, just ask me if this thyroid cleanse is right for you.

How Do I Follow Along?

Rather than wrestling with the controversial idea of a “medical medium”, Dr. Vy and I decided to simply read the book and question whether the strategies discussed might improve thyroid function.

Thyroid Linked to Numerous Health Conditions

Many common health concerns involving fatigue, weight gain, body pain, poor sleep quality, estrogen/testosterone imbalances or just simply feeling vaguely unwell can often be related to thyroid dysfunction. Since thyroid issues and other issues related to endocrine function are so prevalent, we thought that trying a cleanse designed to improve thyroid function and endocrine health would be relevant to our patients. As doctors treating thyroid conditions in Portland, OR, Dr Vy and myself are personally trying the cleanse gives us a chance to take a journey together with our patients. We see this as a fun way to interact with our patients on our journey toward improved endocrine function and general health together.

How Can a “Medical Medium” Help My Thyroid?

Many patients, friends and family members have been asking us what we think about the book “Medical Medium THYROID HEALING”, by Anthony William. The short answer is that we don’t know. However, we have heard multiple personal accounts from people having very positive clinical outcomes and experiences by following the protocol described in the book. Rather than wrestling with the controversial idea of a “medical medium”, Dr. Vy and I decided to simply read the book and question whether the strategies discussed might improve thyroid function. After reading the book, we decided that juicing wholesome vegetables while cutting out problematic foods seemed harmless, so why not be cautiously optimistic and try it out?

In his recent book, William links thyroid dysfunction to a number of factors, some of which can be influenced by food and lifestyle. William claims that thyroid dysfunction can be caused by viral pathogens like reactivated Epstein Barr virus, herpes zoster or HHV6. Interestingly, research published in the US National Institute of Health supports William’s claim by showing a possible link between Epstein-Barr and autoimmune thyroid disorders. Furthermore, medical research shows that emotional stress and the “Western Diet” that is high in saturated fat, sugar (and sugar substitutes) and processed/fast-food may have a role in auto-immune conditions. Furthermore, research shows that the Western Diet increases the body’s inflammatory response, which over time reduces one’s ability to fight off infections. With all this in mind, the idea that eliminating junk food and greatly increasing natural vegetable intake might influence thyroid function makes sense.

Thyroid Dysfunction: Viral, Stress & The “Western Diet”

Can certain vegetables improve thyroid health?
This picture of thyroid health being related to viral causes, stress and common food ingredients also fits with the health conditions that we see some patients come in with. Dr Vy and myself frequently see a low-grade viral picture with many people that come in with dysfunctional thyroid symptoms, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia and hormone imbalances and many other related health concerns.

To be clear, by trying this cleanse, we are not specifically endorsing Anthony William’s recommendations. We are curious about reports of positive results and think it will be fun to try it out. Also, our invitation for you to join this cleanse is not medical advice and patients who are unsure if this cleanse is a good fit for them should ask us. Non-patients should consult their healthcare provider before making changes to their healthcare and diet. Anyway, with that out of the way, we truly want to see how the cleanse affects us personally and we’re excited to share the experience with everyone. Dr. Vy and myself (Dr. Danielle Lockwood) will lead and demonstrate our personal journey with this 90-day thyroid rehab and share a deeper understanding why it may work while being transparent with everyone if it doesn’t work.

After reading the book, we decided that juicing wholesome vegetables while cutting out problematic foods seemed harmless, so why not be cautiously optimistic and try it out?

Every weekday Dr. Vy and Dr Dani will post a slice-of-life snapshot of how we’re doing that day with the cleanse and once a week (usually on a Thursday) we’ll be doing an Instagram-Live, Facebook-Live and a Youtube video on a special topic related to where we are in the cleanse. The Facebook/Instagram Live events will be an opportunity for everyone to ask any questions or comment on where you are with the cleanse.

The whole 90-Day Thyroid Rehab is divided into three parts:

We will start our first 30 days of the 90-day thyroid rehab focusing on Liver, lymphatics and gut health. We will send out more information on this as we get closer to the start date of Monday July 8th. For supplemental support we recommend purchasing the book Thyroid Healing by Anthony William.

The cleanse officially begins on Monday, July 8th, 2019!
